Blend my day - Jan  2020

Whether you’re already a loyal customer or just curious, here are our tips and tricks on how to make the most of our ready-to-blend superfood smoothies.

Warning : you’re about to become a real expert and maximise your nutritional intake. From blending techniques to ultimate storage ideas, milks and add-ons, we’re covering it all!

What equipment do I need?

As our smoothies contain frozen fruits and vegs, we recommend using a high speed blender with a minimum 800 Watts. We absolutely love Nutribullet & Ninja as a mid-range option, good life warranty and functionality. Opt for Magimix for affordable options. Looking for a treat ? Vitamix is a real power machine and true investment for ultimate smoothies and endless creativity.

You can always use a hand blender or food processor, make sure to adapt the recipe as you might need to up the water/ liquid content. If you are considering buying a new blender, you will find our detailed recommendations in this article: 'How to choose the right smoothie blender? 'here.

How to blend: step by step.

You can use the following 2 methods to blend:

1.  Add the liquid of your choice into your blend my day pot and then pour everything into your blender.

2.  Pour the liquid of your choice into your blender and then add the frozen ingredients from the cup (but not the other way around). For more info, see our instructional video.

If you have adjustable speeds, we recommend that you start on slow and then gradually increase the speed to maximum. Be aware that even with a high-speed blender, you can still have some bits left (like dates, cauliflower or berry seeds). As for the mixing time, 30 seconds to 1 minute should be sufficient depending on the power of your mixer. We don't recommend over-mixing as this will “break down” the fiber and other nutrients, making them easier to digest but less filling and increasing the glycemic index.

The question of straws 🌱

We all know that single-use straws are not the most environmentally friendly, even if they are made from PLA or other compostable materials. This is why we strongly recommend that you use reusable straws.

We love stainless steel but you can go for glass or bamboo which are very trendy. Just make sure they're wide enough for thick smoothies (8-10mm in diameter).

How much liquid should I use?

For each recipe, we give you a specific guideline to get the best texture (230 to 250ml). If you don't have a kitchen scale, you can just use a 1 cup or fill the pot until all ingredients are just covered.

When in doubt, always better to put less and then add more if needed. Once blended or soaked, if your smoothie or porridge is too thin / liquid, it will be hard to fix but you can always add more liquid if it’s too thick.

Can I make smoothie bowls?

Yes, you can make smoothie bowls 🥣 with our smoothie kits, but it will make 2 servings instead of one if you add fruits and toppings.

Here are our top recommendations:

- Chia / flax seeds: for more fibre and healthy fats
- Granola (homemade or store bought low in sugar): for extra crunch
- Nuts and seeds 🌰: for more protein and healthy fats.
- Nut butter 🥜 (almond, hazelnut ...): for more creamy and deliciousness (1 to 2 tablespoons).
- Coconut 🥥 (grated or shaved): for healthy fats
- Chocolate chips 🍫: for a touch of indulgence

Some of our recipes are particularly suitable for making smoothies bowls: BETTER THAN YOGA, SKINNY MATCHA, FRESH BLOOD, DR MANGO.

How quickly should I drink my
smoothie once blended?

We recommend that you consume our smoothies immediately after blending them ⏱.

The longer you wait, the more they will oxidise, which will alter the texture (less creamy), the taste, the colour (duller) but most importantly make you lose precious nutrients.

If you can't finish your smoothie all at once, keep it in the fridge for a few hours. Simply stir it before drinking or give it a little extra blend.

We also recommend that you consume our smoothies slowly. Since they contain fiber, protein, healthy fats, and carbs (not just fruit), they tend to be thick and filling. You will most likely need 10-15 minutes to consume them
